Amazon UK has been found guilty and fined £65,000 for breaking aviation safety laws after repeatedly trying to send dangerous goods by airmail.
A judge at Southwark crown court in London said on Friday that Amazon knew the rules, had been warned repeatedly, but had failed to take reasonable care. Although the risks from the goods sent for shipment by air were low, Judge Michael Grieve QC blamed the breaches on “systemic failure” at the online retailer.
As well as the fine, Amazon was ordered to pay £60,000 towards prosecution costs.
Earlier in the week, the jury found Amazon guilty of breaching rules for shipping dangerous goods by airmail on four counts between November 2013 and May 2015.
The prosecution was brought by the Civil Aviation Authority, after a complaint from Royal Mail. Some offences took place after Amazon knew it was under investigation.
In each case, the items – two packages containing laptop lithium batteries and two containing aerosols that used flammable gas propellant – had been flagged up by Amazon’s computer systems as possibly dangerous goods, and subject to restricted shipping rules.
In each case, however, further reviews of the items – carried out remotely by staff in China, Romania and India – led to the items being wrongly redesignated as non-dangerous.
Aerosols are stored separately at Amazon’s warehouse because they are deemed dangerous, and training literature for warehouse staff explains that lithium batteries are dangerous, “potentially causing burns, explosions or a fire”.
Royal Mail, which routinely scans goods bound for air delivery, stopped three of the Amazon packages from entering the airmail system. A fourth was stopped by UPS. Royal Mail wrote to Amazon repeatedly in 2013 raising concerns about the high number of dangerous goods it was sending via airmail.
In total, between November 2013 and May 2015, Royal Mail and other parcel carriers told Amazon of 782 packages containing potentially dangerous goods that should not be airmailed.
Earlier in the trial, Amazon’s defence counsel Stephen Spence said: “Seven hundred and eighty-two can be a big number and can be a small number.” The defence explained that Amazon dispatched 331,400,000 packages during the relevant period of the indictment. “We suggest it is a pretty cracking success rate.”
The CAA brought charges over 11 shipments. The jury failed to reach a verdict on six counts and acquitted Amazon on one count.
In a statement after the sentencing hearing, Amazon said: “The safety of the public, our customers, employees and partners is an absolute priority. We ship millions of products every week and are confident in the sophisticated technologies and processes we have developed to detect potential shipping hazards. We are constantly working to further improve and will continue to work with the CAA in this area.”
Hackers stole the personal data associated with at least 500m Yahoo accounts, the Sunnyvale, California-based company confirmed today.
Details including names, passwords, email addresses, phone numbers and security questions were taken from the company’s network in late 2014 by what was believed to be a state-sponsored hacking group.
The company is investigating the breach with law enforcement but currently believes that credit card or bank details were not included in the stolen data.
“The ongoing investigation suggests that stolen information did not include unprotected passwords, payment card data, or bank account information; payment card data and bank account information are not stored in the system that the investigation has found to be affected,” said the company in a statement.
Nevertheless, the news may jeopardise the $4.8bn sale of Yahoo’s core business to Verizon, announced in July.
Yahoo is notifying users who may have been affected and says that anyone who has not changed their Yahoo passwords since 2014 should do so. The company has also invalidated affected users’ security questions so that they can’t be used to access accounts.
“Yahoo encourages users to review their online accounts for suspicious activity and to change their password and security questions and answers for any other accounts on which they use the same or similar information used for their Yahoo account,” said the company.
Users should be very wary of any emails purporting to come from Yahoo, particularly if they prompt the users to click any links, download any attachments or give out any personal information.
“Yahoo may very well be facing an existential crisis,” said Corey Williams, from identity management software company Centrify. “Already besieged by business execution issues and enduring a fire sale to Verizon, this may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.”
Google’s new messaging app, Allo, is just a bit snoopier than the company promised it would be back in May.
The app is already viewed with suspicion by many privacy advocates, because its integration with Google’s new AI assistant (called, imaginatively, Assistant) requires messages to be sent without end-to-end encryption on by default. That means Google’s Assistant can read your messages, and provide contextual aid – but it also means Google can read them, and so too can law enforcement, national security and anyone else with a valid warrant.
But as a spoonful of sugar to help that go down, the company also announced back in May that Allo would have some of the most progressive message retention policies of any app: rather than keeping your texts forever, they would instead be stored “transiently”, ensuring that your full chat logs aren’t sitting on Google’s servers forever, and anonymously, so that even if the logs are subpoenaed, they can’t be linked back to the sender.
Now that Allo is in app stores, those features appear to be missing in action. By default, messages are stored indefinitely, and linked directly to an account.
To be clear, the defaults can be changed: both end-to-end encryption and ephemeral messages can be turned on by the user as part of the app’s Incognito mode. That mode also disables access to Google Assistant, for obvious reasons. Previously sent messages can also be deleted manually.
Google says that the ephemerality was removed from the shipped version to improve the “smart reply” feature on Allo, which learns from your previous conversations to suggest automatic replies to the latest message sent. The more data, the better the replies, and according to The Verge, “as the Allo team tested those replies, they decided the performance boost from permanently stored messages was worth giving up privacy benefits of transient storage”.
In a statement, Google said: “We’ve given users transparency and control over their data in Google Allo. And our approach is simple – your chat history is saved for you until you choose to delete it.
“You can delete single messages or entire conversations in Allo. We also provide the option to chat in Incognito mode, where messages are end-to-end encrypted and you can set a timer to automatically delete messages for your device and the person you’re chatting with’s device at a set time.”

It is a car that people crossed the road to call nice. One guy undertook me in a chimp display and ran into the car in front of him; I tore past the wreckage (marred bumper), leaving him speechless with rage. The Audi RS6 was the best of cars, it was the worst of cars.
It was only not £100,000 because, in some silted recess of car-industry restraint, that is still understood to be an obscene amount to spend on a car. Instead, with all its trimmings, it was £99,420. What it was trying to achieve – a pleasurable, solid but chic family car that at the flick of a switch turns into a sports car that could quite plausibly take off or fire rockets – is an insanely expensive proposition. Incomprehensible extras (the carbon styling package, the “5-V-spoke” star design black gloss alloy wheels) added another Mazda to the price. You could buy this car, or you could buy a house in Lancashire, or you could buy a boat. It is impossible to critique unless you put the price to one side, but that is unfair on all the other cars. Because it is amazing; and maybe all the other cars would be, too, if they took leave of their senses.
In automatic mode, it tears through the gears with an awesome, mechanical certainty. Switched into sports mode, you change gears yourself with paddles, rev the living hell out of it and probably – though I couldn’t tell because my cheeks were blown back and my hair on end – get close to the advertised 0-62 in 3.7 seconds. It should go without saying that emissions are obscene, and driving this car was like sitting in a crowded restaurant with Andrea Leadsom while she opined loudly that climate change was a myth, and everyone else was thinking you were with her, because you were.
The cabin is painfully luxurious, with its space, superb finish and black Valcona leather, a detail that conveyed nothing really concrete, beyond, “This is our poshest leather.” I have my doubts about its hybrid positioning, because there’s a lot of compromise for both parties (the sports fan has speed but extraneous bulk; the family would worry constantly about getting Fruit Shoots on the leather). I see it more as the car of a top-end henchman, who needs to look upstanding while being able to move as fast as a train.
Whoever you are, it is hard to stay immune to its charms, while easy to overlook its defects: it will ruin you for all other cars, indeed, everything else in life apart from Buckingham Palace and being asleep.

“Where Is The Love?” saw success on radio airplay charts, peaked at number eight on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in Australia and the United Kingdom. It became the biggest-selling single of 2003 in the latter country. The band and Timberlake received two nominations, Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, for “Where Is the Love?” at the 46th Grammy Awards.
A new version “#WHERESTHELOVE” by The Black Eyed Peas featuring The World was released on August 31, 2016, in collaboration with a great number of artists within the music industry. The proceeds of the charity single will go to educational programs.
My thought: As we see in USA there is a big gap between black men and white policemen. I’m not fall into any judgement about it but as this song says Love is the key, Love is the answer and Love is the solution.

[Chorus: will.i.am]
People killin’ people dyin’
Children hurtin’, I hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preachin’?
Would you turn the other cheek again?
Mama, mama, mama, tell us what the hell is goin’ on
Can we all just get along?
Father, Father, Father, help us
Send some guidance from above
Cause people got me, got me questioning
(Where’s the love)
[Verse 1: will.i.am]
Yo, what’s going on with the world, momma?
(Where’s the love)
Yo, people living like they ain’t got no mommas
(Where’s the love)
I think they all distracted by the drama and attracted to the trauma, mama
(Where’s the love)
I think they don’t understand the concept or the meaning of karma
(Where’s the love)
[Verse 2: Diddy]
Overseas, yeah, they trying to stop terrorism
(Where’s the love)
Over here on the streets, the police shoot
The people put the bullets in ’em
(Where’s the love)
But if you only got love for your own race
(Where’s the love)
Then you’re gonna leave space for others to discriminate
(Where’s the love)
[Verse 3: will.i.am]
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate, then you’re bound to get irate
Madness is what you demonstrate
And that’s exactly how hate works and operates
Man, we gotta set it straight
Take control of your mind, just meditate
And let your soul just gravitate to the love
So the whole world celebrate it
[Chorus:]
People killin’ people dyin’
Children hurtin’, I hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preachin’?
Would you turn the other cheek again?
Mama, mama, mama, tell us what the hell is goin’ on
Can we all just get along?
Father, Father, Father, help us
Send some guidance from above
Cause people got me, got me questioning
(Where’s the love)
[Verse 4: Taboo]
It just ain’t the same, always in change
(Where’s the love)
New days are strange, is the world insane?
(Where’s the love)
Nation droppin’ bombs killing our little ones
(Where’s the love)
Ongoing suffering as the youth die young
(Where’s the love)
[Verse 5: Game]
Where’s the love when a child gets murdered
Or a cop gets knocked down
Black lives, not now, everybody matter to me
All races, y’all don’t like what I’m sayin’? Haterade, tall cases
Everybody hate somebody, guess we all racist
Black Eyed Peas do a song about love and y’all hate this
All these protest with different colored faces
We was all born with a heart, why we gotta chase it?
And every time I look around
[Verse 6: Taboo + Ty Dolla $ign]
Every time I look up, every time I look down
No one’s on a common ground
(Where’s the love)
And if you never speak truth, then you never know how love sounds
(Where’s the love)
And if you never know love, then you never know God, wow
(Where’s the love)
Where’s the love y’all? I don’t, I don’t know
Where’s the truth y’all? I don’t know
[Chorus: Justin Timberlake]
People killin’ people dyin’
Children hurtin’, I hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preach?
Would you turn the other cheek?
Father, Father, Father, help us
Send some guidance from above
Cause people got me, got me questioning
(Where’s the love)
[Bridge: DJ Khaled]
Love is the key
(Where’s the love)
Love is the answer
(Where’s the love)
Love is the solution
(Where’s the love)
They don’t want us to love
(Where’s the love)
Love is powerful
(Where’s the love)
[Verse 7: A$AP Rocky + Jaden Smith]
My mama asked me why I never vote never vote
Cause police men want me dead and gone dead and gone
That election looking like a joke such a joke
And the weed man still sellin’ dope
Somebody gotta give these niggas hope give us hope
All he ever wanted was a smoke oh my gosh
Said he can’t breathe with his hands in the air Layin’ on the ground died from a choke
[Verse 8: apl.de.ap + Fergie]
I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders
As I’m gettin’ older y’all people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin’
Selfishness got us followin’ the wrong direction
Wrong information was shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinemas
What happened to the love and the values of humanity?
(Where’s the love)
What happened to the love and the fairness and equality?
(Where’s the love)
Instead of spreading love we’re spreading animosity
